21+  Friday Night Improv with the Lovelies

Deepen your unique sense of movement exploration. Improvisation classes are led by rotating Teaching Artists on the last Friday of the month, crafted for dancers of all levels to enjoy and unwind from the week.

Co-creating, Collaborating & Composing - Improvisation for a Community

The Lovelies establish a collaborative environment to build a dance spontaneously. Class will focus on making poetic decisions, composing as an ensemble, and improvising with expanded awareness. All levels welcome.

The Lovelies are a 4th generation compositional improvisation company working to uncover, establish and conclude the present through curiosity and discovery. The making of dance, sound, spatial- and time-based decisions allow The Lovelies to question the possibilities and generally help, hinder, destroy and create pieces in the moment. The Lovelies have been presented by Judson Church, Triskelion Arts, The Gershwin Hotel, Manhattan Inn, among others. The Lovelies produce the series Slice & Dice to provide a space residency for artists to create long form dances.

Adult Master Class with Nik Owens

"Beginning with the body’s most basic mechanical function (walking) we will begin to pass into and out of walking improvisations and games as a means of generating warmth in the body, invigorating our senses, and beginning to understand the innate heaviness and softness of our limbs and breath. Through a follow-along continuous warmup, we will lubricate our bodies through codified stretches, some yoga-based poses, and through improvised play with how much we can throw, catch, and release our weight. The class will culminate in a phrase using principles like weighted limbs, suspension, catch, release and rebound, and curiosity of the eyes to expand spatial awareness and exploration. Come join and have fun!" - Nik Owens

Nik Owens began his movement experience as a competitive gymnast for 17 years and started his dance training in his senior year of high school and continued at Wesleyan University, where he received a BA in Dance and a certificate in Environmental Studies. He has worked with Nicholas Leichter, Tania Isaac, and Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion and has performed works by Vanessa Tamburi, The Dance Exchange, Mersiha Mesihovic’s CircuitDebris, Gierre Godley’s Project 44 Dance, Aaron McGloin Dance, Raja Kelly/The Feath3r Theory, Bryn Cohn and Artists, and Helen Simoneau Danse. "Your body is 70-80% water. In this class we will use solo and partnered improvisational practices based in imagery and anatomy to figure out what that means for our ease of movement and qualitative choice-making." - Leah Wilks

Leah Wilks is a Brooklyn-based dancer, teacher, and choreographer. Her dance trajectory began with her sucking her thumb in the corner of a ballet class. Things have progressed, and she now has her MFA in Dance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where she spent her time teaching, mentoring, creating electronic music, and making dances as a part of the duo L+M.

"The class will combine all these modalities to address the questions, postures, and injuries in the room. Our goal is to find rest and efficient function in our bodies. We may work through guided exercises to inform body mechanics, use visualizations to play with qualities of tone, and/or explore self touch and safe touch with others.  In our conversations we’ll try to strip away the “should’s” “good’s” and “bad’s” and focus on our present unjudged selves." - Austin Selden

Austin Selden is a massage therapist, pilates instructor, dancer, and has taken courses in other somatic practices.

Master Workshop with David Dorfman Dance

David Dorfman and Lisa Race teach special back-to-back Master workshops at Dancewave, a unique opportunity to work with these distinguished artists. Material will range in styles from release-based post-modern work connecting with the floor, to an eclectic standing modern class. Explore a weighted and grounded approach to movement, harnessing the body's momentum and force, varying approaches to physical contact, intent and focus, and compositional choices through improvisation.

The second half will explore skills that aim to facilitate moving in and out of the floor with efficiency. Learn to upend the body with inversions that are not fixed in space but instead play with the freedom of suspension while upside down. Dancers will incorporate these explorations into short movement phrases, challenging the body to defy preconceived notions of what a body can achieve in motion.

For experienced dancers. $40 Early Bird price - $50 after November 15

Master Class - Adult Classes (David Dorfman & Lisa Race (12/13))
Early Bird Tuition: $40.00

She has been creating new pieces based on collective creation, Contact Improvisation, and interdisciplinary collaborations, informed by her Master's degree in theater and live arts.
